Why I Would Like to Become a Health Professional
by Gina Shastri
xxxWhat is a health professional? Many think only doctors are health professionals, but this is not true. A health professional is anyone who provides medical care through following procedures and protocols. They can range from those who deal directly with patients such as doctors, nurses, and therapists, to those that work behind the scenes with the diagnosis and with samples, such as phlebotomists, pharmacists, and technicians. Any position no matter how big or how small plays an important role in the field as well as in the welfare of the patient.
xxxIn order to gain exposure to the medical field, I started volunteering at St. Marys Hospital in Passaic, NJ. Throughout the three years I have volunteered, I have had first-hand experience in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and in the post-partum section of the Maternity Ward. Both were very different, but were nonetheless rewarding opportunities. The ICU was a very fast-paced, sometimes stressful atmosphere, whereas post-partum was often quiet and joyful. In the ICU, I directly helped nurses transfer patients from their bed to stretchers and vice versa. I also brought blood samples down to the lab, as well as prescriptions to the pharmacy. I assisted nurses in organizing patients charts and often interacted with the patients themselves.
xxxSimilarly in the post-partum section of the Maternity Ward, I helped nurses transfer patients onto stretchers and onto wheelchairs. I also distributed linens and baby products to patients, as well as brought babies to their appropriate mothers. My entire volunteering experience has given me so much insight into what I want to become in life. The atmosphere of the hospital just intrigued me. The sights and sounds amazed me, as well as the fact that this was the place where some took their first breath while others were taking their last. The work ethic of the doctors and nurses was incredible, as everything was always done in a timely and orderly fashion. Most importantly, everyone did their job with a smile. It was at that moment when I realized that these were the type of people I wanted to be surrounded by, and this was the environment I wanted to be in as a professional.
xxxIn conclusion, I would like to become a health professional because through my volunteering experience I have gained familiarity in the medical field, although there is much more to learn. By becoming a health professional, I want to be someone that wakes up everyday and is proud to better peoples lives. I want to be able to help someone in the worst of times to hopefully assure them that everything will be alright. I will strive to be that helping hand. Most notably, I feel that I will have lived my life to its fullest when I am certain I have impacted anothers.

Why I Would Like to Become a Health Professional
by Bhavini Prajapati
xxxLow sounds dragged; the droning of the dishwasher and silent whisper of the computers created a new type of silence, in this slovenly kept room. Sitting against the couch, with a blanket to keep warm, I zoomed in on a half used, odd-shaped Vaseline bottle, placed in ambient light. Images of my ever-pursuing thoughts appeared before my eyes, as I became immersed into the deep sea of my dreams.
xxxThere I was 11-12 years later, in hospital doing routine-checkups. As I passed from patient to patient, I felt a certain indescribable happiness. After I checked up on each patient, I sensed a feeling of accomplishment. I had finally been able to apply what I have learned in the eight years I spent in school in a global way. The joy on my patients faces was enough to make my day a little more upbeat. Remembering the days I used to work as an EMT and volunteer in select hospitals, I recalled how to attain true happiness. There was a certain ambiance to helping someone, that had the great effect of touching me in most sacred of places; my heart.
xxxIn a moment I snapped back to reality and came to an interesting realization. Pondering over the selfless service of so many doctors, I came to believe that these doctors were nothing but superheroes. Their capes took the disguise of modest white lab coats. Their superpowers lie hidden in the vast abyss of knowledge they have obtained over many years. Their defining feature: their ability to save lives. Equipped with the tools to make a difference in the world, these doctors reach out to help others and not just themselves.
xxxHowever, my desire to become a doctor lies not only in my need to express my compassion, but it also lies in my curiosity regarding the human body. Every little action, thought, or speech is the product of the bodys complicated but well-coordinated processes. We breathe, walk, and talk simultaneously because our bodies have the ability to multi-task without us ever being conscious of it. As a doctor, I would be able to know most of the bodys processes and because I would have an everyday application of this knowledge, it would remain with me throughout my life.
xxxBecoming a doctor would give me the opportunity not only to satisfy my yearning for knowledge, but it would also allow me give back to my community in the most compassionate way. For years this community has nurtured me to become the greatest I can be. The only means through which I can reach this potential is by pursuing what is naturally intuitive to me; working selflessly to become what I have believed has been my purpose; a doctor.

Why I Would Like to Become a Health Professional

xxxNursing is a profession that is held in high esteem by many people. Many nurses enjoy excellent wages and benefits for their work. However the work can be challenging and emotionally draining in many healthcare settings and not everyone may be cut out to be a nurse. Even though there are many obstacles and challenges involved, the pros outweigh the cons and this is why I aspire to become a nurse.
xxxWhen I picture a nurse I see a person who is empathetic, responsible, caring, understanding, and someone who can make others feel comfortable. This is why I would like to become a health care professional. I feel I possess these qualities and more to be able to become a nurse. As far as I could remember I always liked to help people. Now that I am eighteen years old, much wiser than I ever was, I still find that when I help people I feel really pleased. Seeing someone happy because of something I did only makes me happier. I know that being a nurse will force me to meet many different people and I am up for the challenge. I can talk to almost anyone and make them feel comfortable. I feel myself to be a very responsible person from a very young age.
xxxAs I was growing up my parents always encouraged my brother and I to excel in school and nothing below a B was acceptable. This forced me to set an example for my brother to be responsible and make sure that all the work assigned to him must be done on time. I know that when I become a nurse I will always be responsible and do everything that is expected of me because of my upbringing. This career will help to bring out all the qualities I know I possess in order to help others better.
xxxWhen I was very young my aunt had passed away from breast cancer. I was devastated and so was my family. All I could remember was when my family and I went to go visit her at the hospital, the nurses where so nice and helped my aunt whenever she needed anything. I remember telling my parents I want to become a nurse to help people like her. When I become a nurse I hope that I will be able to make my parents who work day and night to provide for my brother and I, proud of the woman they raised me to be, but most of all I want to be proud of myself.
xxxI know that being a nurse will be hard and it will not be easy, however I know it is a career that I will be very happy to wake up every morning for. Meeting people of all ages and different backgrounds will most defiantly be a thrill and a great pleasure. I look forward to becoming a nurse and helping people the one great pleasure I will never get tired of.
