ImmediCenter Family Medicine Stop Smoking Now

Dr. Basista & Dr. Del Casale Top 10 Stay-Healthy Tips:

Smoking Danger Chart1. Stop Smoking Now

A PERSONAL WORD FROM MICHAEL BASISTA, M.D., Director, IMMEDICENTER

••••These days, even a young child knows the dangers of smoking. If you are a smoker today, it means that you have considered the evidence, and have made the conscious decision to smoke. There would be little point for me, as a doctor, to try to convince you to stop.

THEN, WHY STILL ANOTHER ARTICLE ON THE DANGERS OF SMOKING?

••••Those of us over forty remember when smoking was still considered a reasonable
option. Then, a series of warnings came from the Surgeon General's Office: "Smoking
might be hazardous to your health," "Smoking is hazardous to your health," "Smoking is dangerous to your health," "Smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease," etc.

••••The American public became well aware that smoking was an unhealthy choice.
The reason
IMMEDICENTER is running a no-smoking article in 2011, is that the new
research is so compelling, and positively links smoking to:

cancer
cardiovascular diseases
pulmonary diseases
pulmonary diseases
reproductive issues
developmental defects
hormonal problems in pregnant women
unhealthy increases in heart rate and blood pressure
placental problems
pregnancy inviability
preterm delivery
low birth weight
damaged fetal lung & brain tissue
cleft palate in newborns
DNA damage in sperm cells
male infertility
premature death

Not to mention the new evidence that second hand smoke can cause:

respiratory illness
heart disease
lung cancer
sudden infant death syndrome

••••We start this series with smoking because it is the one health issue where you
can choose health over illness.

••••To put it simply, if you smoke, stop.

••••
••••Twenty-nine Surgeon General's reports have documented conclusive biological evidence that tobacco use in any form is harmful and can be deadly.

••••Cigarettes are responsible for approximately 443,000 deaths - one in every five deaths - each year in the US.  Cigarettes cost more than $193 billion annually in health care costs and loss of productivity.

••••The new Surgeon General's report provides evidence on how cigarettes causecancer, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, negative reproductive and developmental effects, nicotine addiction, and premature death.

••••Evidence links smoking in pregnant women to decreases in essential hormones, unhealthy increases in heart rate and blood pressure, and problems with the placenta that could lead to fetal loss, preterm delivery, low birth weight, and damaged fetal lung & brain tissue.

••••Smoking in men leads to DNA damage in sperm cells. This affects male fertility, pregnancy viability, and can cause defects in offspring including cleft palate.

••••Every year, there is more and more evidence proving that second hand smoke can cause respiratory illness, heart disease, and even cancer in non-smokers exposed to smoke.

••••Until we end tobacco use, more people will become addicted, more people will become sick, and more families will be devastated by the loss of loved ones.

••••In terms of the effect smoking has on your skin, Dr. Susan Palmer, of Montclair Cosmetic Surgery, writes, "External beauty is the result of internal health. Smoking robs the skin of oxygen, which is essential for healthy, beautiful skin. In addition, smoking damages the skin by subjecting it to carbon dioxide, and poisonous gases such as ammonia, butane, and arsenic."
