ImmediCenter Article Stress!

Stress! and Your Health
By Michael P. Basista, M.D., Director, ImmediCenter Walk In Medical Care

xxxAt times, stress can be useful - a deadline can help you finish a project on time; an upcoming exam will cause you to study harder.

xxxWhen stress occurs too often and lasts too long, it can lead to headaches, insomnia, stomach pain, bowel problems, backaches, chest pain, heart attacks, strokes and depression. It can worsen underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and numerous other illnesses. Stress weakens the immune system. People are more susceptible to catching colds or flu if they are “stressed out.”

xxxStress causes the body to react like it is in danger. It releases hormones that increase heart rate, respiration rate, and cause a burst of energy.

xxxDuring difficult economic times like these, I see more than the usual amount of patients with complaints such as fast heartbeat, lack of energy, muscular aches, stomach pain, insomnia, appetite change, and grinding of teeth. They are not aware that these problems are often caused by stress.

xxxThe good news is that stress can be brought under control. The key to overcoming stress is to change one’s outlook from negative to positive. Do things to make yourself happy in the short run.
xxxxxxGoing to the movies or the theater is a quick fix.
xxxxxxRead, garden, play or listen to music.
xxxxxxAttend meetings, or go to your house of worship to connect with people.
xxxxxxRelease your emotions by talking, laughing or crying.

xxxExercise is crucial. A minimum of 20 minutes of aerobic exercise per day will reduce stress, and create a feeling of well-being. Always consult your physician before starting any exercise program after being sedentary. Deep breathing exercises, muscle relaxation, meditation, and prayer will all help. Eat a healthy and balanced diet.

xxxTime management and keeping to a schedule will also help you deal with pressure. Be realistic. Don’t try to accomplish too much in too little time. Set attainable goals.

xxxExcess free time can cause stress in the unemployed or retired. Volunteer work can provide a new sense of structure and purpose. Above all, do not lose hope. Overcoming stress is very often mind over matter.

xxxYour health depends upon it.
